A Chinese internal martial art built on linear striking and animal-form movements, with both performance and sparring competitions.
Origin and rules
Xingyi Quan, or Form-Intent Boxing, is traditionally attributed to the Song dynasty general Yue Fei and was systematised by Ji Longfeng in the 17th century. Together with Tai Chi and Bagua, it forms the three classical internal arts of Chinese martial culture.
How it plays
Practitioners learn the Five Elements fists, twelve animal forms, and paired drills emphasising linear advance, body alignment, and explosive power. Modern competition includes solo forms judged on technique and free-fighting sanda formats with strikes and throws.
Competition
The International Wushu Federation includes xingyi quan in traditional taolu events at the World Wushu Championships. China, Russia, Iran, Brazil, and Italy field strong competitors. The discipline is not on the Olympic programme but featured at the 2008 Beijing Wushu Tournament.
