Zui Quan

Filter:

A Chinese martial art and wushu event styled on the off-balance gait of a drunken person, with judged performance routines.

Origin and rules

Zui Quan, or Drunken Fist, draws on legends of Buddhist monk Lu Zhishen and the Daoist Eight Immortals. Codified within the Shaolin tradition and Northern styles, it became a showcase event in modern competitive wushu.

How it plays

Performers use deceptive falls, swaying steps, and sudden strikes that mimic a tipsy state while remaining tightly controlled. Routines are scored on technique, balance, and creative expression. Drunken Sword and Drunken Staff weapon forms are also contested.

Competition

Zui Quan appears at the IWUF World Wushu Championships and regional games as part of the choreographed taolu programme. China, Vietnam, Russia, Iran, and the United States produce top performers. The form is not Olympic but featured in the 2008 Beijing Wushu Tournament.
