A Latin-inspired dance fitness activity now contested as a judged competitive event of choreographed routines to music.
Origin and rules
Zumba was invented in 1990s Cali by Colombian dancer Alberto “Beto” Perez when he improvised a class using Latin music instead of his missed fitness tape. Zumba Fitness LLC organised the worldwide network of instructors and competitive showcases.
How it plays
Competitive Zumba is contested in solo, duo, and team categories. Routines run two to four minutes with prescribed Latin and global rhythms. Judges score on choreography, energy, technique, and team synchronisation, with showcase events drawing thousands of dancers.
Competition
The Zumba Convention and the Zumba Instructor Network Showcase serve as the headline events, supplemented by regional competitions in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Zumba Fitness is not a recognised competitive sport at the Olympics.
