The larger of the two main islands of Antigua and Barbuda, a Lesser Antilles country in the eastern Caribbean.
Geography
Antigua is relatively flat compared with its volcanic neighbors, the result of older volcanic rock that has eroded over millions of years. The Shekerley Mountains in the southwest contain Mount Obama, formerly Boggy Peak, at 402 m. The island is rimmed by an unusually large number of beaches.
History
The island was a British colony from 1632 until independence in 1981. English Harbour on the south coast housed the Royal Navy’s principal Caribbean base, with the Nelson’s Dockyard now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Economy
Tourism, particularly cruise traffic into Saint John’s harbor, dominates the economy, supported by an offshore financial services sector.
