Geography
The Azores lie roughly 1,400 km west of Lisbon and span about 600 km across three groups. The nine main islands are all volcanic, with Pico, on the island of the same name, the tallest mountain in Portugal at 2,351 m.
Climate
The maritime climate is mild and humid year-round. The islands lie near the meteorological feature known as the Azores High, a semi-permanent high-pressure system that strongly influences European weather.
Wildlife
The surrounding ocean is among the world’s best whale-watching areas, with sperm whales resident year-round and roughly 25 species recorded.
