The smaller of the two islands in the federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, formed by a single conical volcano.
Geography
Nevis is roughly circular, dominated by Nevis Peak, a dormant stratovolcano rising to 985 m. The island lies about 3 km southeast of Saint Kitts, separated by a shallow channel known as the Narrows.
History
Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1493 and gave it the Spanish name Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, “Our Lady of the Snows,” for the cloud cap on the volcano. United States founding father Alexander Hamilton was born in Charlestown around 1755.
Politics
Nevis has a substantial degree of internal autonomy within the federation, with its own elected assembly and premier. Referendums on full independence from Saint Kitts have been narrowly defeated.
