Niue

Filter:

One of the world's largest raised coral atolls, a self-governing island state in free association with New Zealand.

Geography

Niue is a single roughly oval island shaped from uplifted coral, with a low central plateau ringed by limestone cliffs and sea caves. There is no surface river, as rainwater drains directly through the porous rock to an underground freshwater lens.

Status

Niue is self-governing in free association with New Zealand, with Niueans holding New Zealand citizenship. The arrangement, in place since 1974, gives Niue control over domestic affairs while New Zealand handles defense and most foreign relations.

Population

The resident population has declined steadily as Niueans migrate to New Zealand. Around 20,000 people of Niuean descent now live in New Zealand, more than ten times the island’s resident population.
