A large island off the east coast of Canada, the bigger and more populous part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Geography
Newfoundland is roughly 470 km long, with a deeply indented coastline of fjords and bays. The Long Range Mountains run along the western coast, with the Cabox the highest point at 814 m. Gros Morne National Park on the west coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exposed Earth mantle rock.
History
L’Anse aux Meadows, on the northern tip, contains the only confirmed Norse settlement in North America outside Greenland, dating to around 1000 CE. John Cabot reached the island in 1497, beginning centuries of European fishing in the Grand Banks.
Culture
The Newfoundland English dialect retains many words and inflections from older English dialects of southwestern England and southeastern Ireland.
