Geography
Tahiti consists of two roughly circular landmasses joined by a narrow isthmus, Tahiti Nui to the northwest and the smaller Tahiti Iti to the southeast. Mount Orohena, on Tahiti Nui, is the highest peak in French Polynesia at 2,241 m.
Climate
The island has a tropical climate with a wetter season from November to April and a drier, cooler period from May to October. The interior receives heavy orographic rainfall while coastal areas are more moderate.
Culture
Papeete, on the northwest coast, is the political and economic center of French Polynesia. The island is the traditional cultural heart of the Tahitian people and is famed for surfing, particularly at Teahupoo on the south coast.
