The larger of the two main islands of Trinidad and Tobago, lying just off the northeast coast of Venezuela.
Geography
Trinidad sits on the South American continental shelf and was geologically connected to Venezuela in the recent geological past. Three roughly east-west mountain ranges crease the island, with El Cerro del Aripo the highest peak at 940 m.
Economy
Trinidad has substantial oil and natural gas reserves, the basis of one of the most industrialized economies in the Caribbean. The Pitch Lake at La Brea, the world’s largest natural deposit of asphalt, has been mined since the 16th century.
Culture
Port of Spain hosts the annual Trinidad Carnival, considered among the largest in the world. The island is also the birthplace of steelpan music and calypso.
