Production
Universal Pictures released Sanctum in February 2011. James Cameron served as executive producer and shared his Pace Fusion 3D camera systems. Co-screenwriter Andrew Wight drew on his own experience leading the 1988 Pannikin Plain Cave expedition, in which 15 divers were trapped underground.
Story
A multinational team led by Australian master diver Frank McGuire is exploring the Esa-ala Cave system on the south coast of Papua New Guinea. When a cyclone floods the cave entrance, the team must navigate unmapped passages toward the sea, with dwindling oxygen and worsening interpersonal tensions.
Reception
Sanctum grossed over 108 million dollars worldwide. Critics gave it mixed reviews, but it was widely cited as a useful test of 3D imagery in tight spaces, helping inform later underwater and stereoscopic productions during the 2010s.
