A 1999 American gothic horror film directed by Tim Burton, very loosely adapting Washington Irving's 1820 short story about a New York town haunted by a headless horseman.
Production
Paramount Pictures released Sleepy Hollow in November 1999. Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the screenplay, with uncredited contributions by Tom Stoppard. Tim Burton shot the film at Leavesden Studios in England on a stylized desaturated palette. Johnny Depp starred as Ichabod Crane.
Story
In 1799, New York investigator Ichabod Crane is sent to the village of Sleepy Hollow to look into a string of decapitations attributed to a headless Hessian horseman. Crane, a rationalist, finds that the murders cluster around a local family quarrel and a mysterious widow.
Reception
Sleepy Hollow won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. The film grossed over 207 million dollars worldwide and is widely regarded as one of Tim Burton’s most stylistically distinctive American features.
