Sleuth

Filter:

A 1972 British mystery thriller directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz adapting Anthony Shaffer's stage play, in which a successful mystery writer invites his wife's lover to his English country house.

Production

Palomar Pictures and 20th Century Fox released Sleuth in December 1972. Anthony Shaffer adapted his own 1970 stage play. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, in his final feature, directed Laurence Olivier as the writer Andrew Wyke and Michael Caine as the hairdresser Milo Tindle.

Story

Wealthy English mystery novelist Andrew Wyke invites Milo, his wife Marguerite’s lover, to his country estate Cloak Manor. Andrew proposes that Milo stage a robbery of his jewels for an insurance payout, but the plan turns into an escalating game of disguises, deceptions, and reversals.

Reception

Both Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, the only case in which a film’s entire credited cast was nominated in the lead acting categories. Sleuth was remade in 2007 by Kenneth Branagh, this time with Caine in the senior role.
