Yucca

Yucca filamentosa

Filter:

A North American desert plant with stiff sword-shaped leaves and tall stalks of white bell flowers, growing wild from desert scrub to high-altitude grasslands.

Description

Yucca forms a stiff rosette of blue-green sword-shaped leaves with curly white filaments along the edges. Tall flowering stalks rise above the foliage bearing dozens of nodding cream bell flowers.

Cultivation

Drought, heat, and cold tolerant, yucca thrives in poor sandy soil and full sun. It is widely planted in xeriscape gardens and as architectural accent indoors and out.

Uses

Yucca flowers and fruit are eaten in Indigenous Mexican cuisine, and the leaves yield strong fibers used for cordage and weaving. Many species are pollinated only by yucca moths that lay eggs in the flowers.
