What plumbers do

Plumbers install supply lines, drains, fixtures, and water heaters in new construction, replace and repair plumbing in existing homes, and respond to leaks, clogs, and gas leaks. They also install backflow preventers, water softeners, and irrigation systems.

Training path

US plumbers typically complete a four- to five-year apprenticeship combining paid on-the-job work with classroom instruction, then pass a state or local licensing exam. Some begin with a technical college program before apprenticing.

Settings

Plumbers work for service companies on residential calls, on commercial and industrial new construction, in hospital and laboratory facilities, and in maintenance roles for property managers, factories, and municipalities.
