A local-government official who interprets and enforces municipal zoning codes governing land use and property development.
What zoning officers do
Zoning officers review building permit applications, evaluate variance and rezoning requests, conduct site inspections, and present findings to planning commissions and zoning boards. They are the front-line interpreters of often-complex municipal codes.
Training path
A bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, geography, or a related field is standard. Many earn the American Institute of Certified Planners credential, requiring planning experience and passing the AICP exam.
Work setting
Most positions sit in municipal or county planning departments. Day-to-day work alternates between desk reviews of submitted plans, on-site field inspections, evening public hearings, and meetings with developers, attorneys, and residents.
