What city planners do

Training path

Most US city planners hold a master’s degree in urban planning from a Planning Accreditation Board program. After two years of experience and passing the AICP exam, planners earn the American Institute of Certified Planners credential.

City planners work in municipal and county planning departments, regional planning agencies, state transportation departments, private consulting firms, large developer organizations, and nonprofits focused on housing and community development.
