Croquet

Filter:

A precision lawn sport in which players knock balls through wire wickets in a set order using a mallet.

Origin and rules

Modern croquet was codified in 1860s England after spreading from French and Irish stick-and-ball traditions. The World Croquet Federation was founded in 1986 and now sanctions Association Croquet and Golf Croquet as the leading international codes.

How it plays

Two singles or pairs strike balls through six hoops in a set sequence and finish on the centre peg. Croquet shots use a mallet stroke on the player’s ball touching an opponent’s ball, allowing tactical placement. Games are won by the first to peg out.

Competition

The MacRobertson Shield is the historic test-style team trophy. The WCF Association Croquet World Championship and Golf Croquet World Championship are the elite singles events. England, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Egypt lead. Croquet was an Olympic sport at Paris 1900.
