A pub-born precision sport in which players throw small barbed projectiles at a segmented circular board from a fixed distance.
Origin and rules
Modern darts evolved in late 19th-century English pubs from shorter throwing games. Brian Gamlin standardised the now-classic dartboard number layout around 1896, and the British Darts Organisation was founded in 1973.
How it plays
Players throw three darts per turn at a board scoring 1 to 20 segments, with bullseye worth 50 and a treble ring tripling each segment. The standard professional format is 501 down, with each player subtracting their score and finishing on a double.
Competition
The PDC World Darts Championship held at Alexandra Palace each January is the sport’s marquee event, with the WDF World Championship serving as the amateur counterpart. England, the Netherlands, Scotland, Wales, and Australia dominate. Darts is not on the Olympic programme.
