Dodgeball

Filter:

A team sport in which players throw soft balls at opposing players to eliminate them while dodging incoming throws.

Origin and rules

Dodgeball traces to early 19th-century British boarding-school games, with modern indoor rules codified in the United States and Canada from the 1960s. The World Dodgeball Federation was founded in 2008 to unify international competition.

How it plays

Two teams of six occupy halves of a court. After a centre rush, players throw balls at opponents to eliminate them. A caught ball returns a teammate to play and eliminates the thrower. A set ends when all opponents are out or time expires.

Competition

The WDBF Dodgeball World Championship and the World Dodgeball Association Worlds are the elite events, contested across mixed, men, women, and rubber-ball categories. Australia, the United States, Canada, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom dominate. Dodgeball is not on the Olympic programme.
