A Japanese sword art focused on the rapid draw, cut, and resheathing of the katana from a seated or standing posture.
Origin and rules
Iaijutsu was systematised in the 16th century by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu and codified into many schools, or ryu. Modern federations practise both traditional koryu forms and the standardised seitei iaido curriculum.
How it plays
Practitioners perform set kata that begin with the sword sheathed. Each form moves through draw, cut, blood removal, and resheathing against imagined attackers. Tournament events are judged on precision, posture, and breath control.
Competition
Iaido and iaijutsu tournaments are held under national kendo federations and the International Kendo Federation umbrella. Japan, South Korea, and several European nations field strong competitors. The art is not Olympic and is judged in solo form.
