Sepak Takraw

Filter:

A Southeast Asian team sport played over a net using only the feet, knees, chest, and head to volley a small woven ball.

Origin and rules

Sepak takraw evolved from centuries-old kicking games such as sepak raga in Malaysia and Thailand, with codified court rules dating to 1933. The International Sepaktakraw Federation was established in 1988 to standardise international competition.

How it plays

Two teams of three contest 15-point sets on a court the same size as badminton doubles. Players use bicycle kicks, headers, and chest passes to volley the ball over a 1.52-metre net. A team gets three touches by different players before crossing.

Competition

The ISTAF World Cup, King’s Cup in Thailand, and the Southeast Asian Games are the major events. Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and South Korea dominate. Sepak takraw was added to the Asian Games in 1990 and continues to campaign for Olympic inclusion.
