Shuffleboard

Filter:

A precision sport in which players use a long cue to push weighted discs across a smooth court into scoring zones.

Origin and rules

Shuffleboard descends from a 15th-century English pub game called shove-groat, also known as shovelboard, in which players slid coins across a wooden table. It crossed the Atlantic and became popular on cruise ships and in retirement communities.

How it plays

Court shuffleboard is played on a long narrow court, with players shoving discs into a triangular scoring zone using a cue. Table shuffleboard is played on a 6- to 22-foot wooden table with shaker powder reducing friction. Both reward soft touch and tactical block play.

Competition

The International Shuffleboard Association World Championships and the National Shuffleboard Association events anchor the calendar. The United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Brazil have produced top players. Shuffleboard is not on the Olympic programme.
