A small limestone island in the Bay of Naples famed for the luminous Blue Grotto sea cave.
Geography
Capri lies at the southern end of the Bay of Naples, roughly 5 km from the Sorrento Peninsula. The island is shaped by limestone cliffs that rise steeply from the sea to a high plateau. Mount Solaro is the highest point at 589 m.
History
The Roman emperor Tiberius ruled from Capri during the final decade of his reign from 27 to 37 CE, building twelve villas across the island. Ruins of his Villa Jovis still stand on the northeast cliff.
Notable features
The Blue Grotto is a sea cave whose seawater glows electric blue due to sunlight entering through an underwater opening. The Faraglioni, three sharp limestone sea stacks off the southeast coast, are an emblem of the island.
