Cyprus (Island)

Filter:

The third-largest Mediterranean island, divided between the Republic of Cyprus and the breakaway Turkish-administered north.

Geography

Cyprus is dominated by two mountain ranges, the Troodos in the southwest and the narrow Kyrenia chain along the northern coast. Mount Olympus in the Troodos reaches 1,952 m. The fertile Mesaoria plain stretches between the ranges.

Politics

The island has been divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974, with the Republic of Cyprus controlling the south and the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus the north. A UN-patrolled buffer zone runs through the capital Nicosia, the world’s last divided capital.

History

Cyprus is the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite in Greek mythology. It has been ruled in turn by Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans, and the British.
