A French Mediterranean island with mountainous interior, north of Sardinia and southeast of mainland France.
Geography
Corsica is sometimes described as a mountain in the sea. Two-thirds of the island lies above 400 m, and Monte Cinto in the northwest reaches 2,706 m. The granite spine runs north to south, creating a dramatic contrast between rugged interior and indented coast.
History
The island was a Genoese possession for centuries before being ceded to France in 1768. Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio the following year.
Culture
Corsican, a Romance language closely related to Tuscan Italian, is co-official with French. The island has a long-running but reduced separatist political tradition, and polyphonic vocal music remains an active local art form.
