Geography
Cuba is long and narrow, stretching roughly 1,250 km from Cape San Antonio in the west to Punta Maisí in the east. The Sierra Maestra range in the southeast contains the highest point, Pico Turquino at 1,974 m.
Climate
The island has a tropical climate moderated by trade winds, with a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. Hurricanes regularly threaten the western half during late summer and autumn.
Population
About 80 percent of the population is urban. Havana, founded in 1519, is the capital and largest city. The economy historically centered on sugar, tobacco, and nickel.
