A fast-growing Central Asian annual herb cultivated for thousands of years for its strong stem fiber, edible seeds, and cannabinoid-rich flowers.
Description
Hemp grows as a tall annual with palmate compound leaves bearing serrated leaflets. Industrial hemp is typically grown closely spaced and produces little branching.
Cultivation
Hemp thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun and matures in around 100 days. Regulations distinguish industrial hemp (low THC) from drug-type cannabis around the world.
Uses
The bast fibers make rope, canvas, paper, and textiles, and inner woody hurd is used in hempcrete construction. Seeds yield protein and oil, and CBD extracts are sold worldwide.
