Lambs Ear

Stachys byzantina

Filter:

A Turkish and Iranian perennial herb with soft silvery felted leaves that feel like a lambs ear, a popular tactile plant for childrens and sensory gardens.

Description

Lambs ear forms low mats of thick, tongue-shaped, silvery-grey leaves densely covered in soft hairs. In summer tall woolly flower spikes carry small purple-pink flowers loved by bees.

Cultivation

Drought-tolerant once established, lambs ear prefers full sun and dry sharp soil. Wet summers cause leaves to rot. Remove tattered foliage to keep clumps tidy.

Uses

A favorite border edging and sensory plant for children, lambs ear leaves have also historically been used as field bandages to staunch bleeding due to their absorbent woolly surface.
