Lemon Balm

Melissa officinalis

Filter:

A Mediterranean mint-family herb with lemon-scented leaves used for calming herbal teas, savory cooking, and as a popular garden bee plant.

Description

Lemon balm has square stems and crinkled heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges. Crushed leaves release a fresh lemon scent. Small white flowers attract many bees and beneficial insects.

Cultivation

Easy in full sun or part shade in average soil, lemon balm spreads steadily and self-seeds. Cutting it back hard several times a season keeps the foliage fresh and lemony.

Uses

A traditional remedy for anxiety, insomnia, and indigestion since ancient Greece, lemon balm is brewed as tea, added to salads and fish dishes, and tucked into cottage gardens for bees.
