Oleander

Nerium oleander

Filter:

A Mediterranean and South Asian evergreen shrub with leathery leaves and showy pink, white, or red flowers, beautiful but among the most poisonous of garden plants.

Description

Oleander has slim, leathery, lance-shaped leaves in whorls of three and clusters of fragrant funnel-shaped flowers. Modern cultivars include double forms and a wide color range.

Cultivation

Drought, heat, and salt tolerant, oleander thrives in poor soil and full sun and is widely planted along highways and coastal gardens in warm climates.

Uses

A workhorse evergreen shrub but every part is highly toxic if eaten. Wash hands after pruning and never use stems for skewers or fires, as the smoke is also dangerous.
