A Eurasian perennial cool-season grass spreading aggressively by underground rhizomes, considered one of the worst lawn and crop weeds in temperate zones.
Description
Quack grass has bluish-green flat blades and stiff upright spikes of small flowers. Beneath the soil it sends out tough cream-white rhizomes that root every few centimetres, regrowing if broken.
Cultivation
A noxious weed in gardens and grain fields, quack grass is extremely hard to remove because every fragment of rhizome can sprout a new plant. It is grazed by livestock and tolerates heavy use.
Uses
Historically the rhizomes were dried and used as a soothing diuretic herbal tea called couch grass tea. Birds and small mammals eat the seeds and shelter in dense patches.
