PLANTS

Queen Palm

Syagrus romanzoffiana

Filter:

A graceful South American palm with arching feathery fronds and a smooth grey trunk, the most-planted street palm of Florida, Brazil, and the Mediterranean.

Description

The queen palm grows a single slim grey trunk topped with a crown of long arching pinnate fronds. Large hanging clusters of bright orange dates ripen in autumn and attract many birds.

Cultivation

Fast growing and adaptable to many soils with regular water, the queen palm tolerates light frost and is widely planted in suburban streets of subtropical cities.

Uses

A workhorse of street and avenue plantings. The sweet edible fruits feed wildlife and were historically used to feed pigs, while parrots strip the bunches in city parks.
