A large American and European genus of low spreading herbs and shrubs grown for clusters of small bright flowers and a long summer blooming season.
Description
Tall verbena has slim wiry stems carrying clusters of small purple flowers held high above narrow leaves. Trailing verbenas grow as low spreading mats covered in domed flower heads.
Cultivation
Verbenas like full sun and well-drained soil. They are heat tolerant once established and bloom from late spring until frost, attracting butterflies and other pollinators.
Uses
Tall verbena is a see-through plant in modern naturalistic plantings, while trailing types are mainstays of summer containers and hanging baskets. Some species yield aromatic herb teas.
