A small carnivorous American bog plant with hinged leaves that snap shut on insects, perhaps the most famous of all carnivorous plants.
Description
Venus flytrap forms a small rosette of leaves whose tips are hinged traps lined with sensitive trigger hairs. Touch any two hairs in quick succession and the trap snaps shut on the prey.
Cultivation
Bog conditions are crucial: pure rain or distilled water, peat or sphagnum mix, bright sun, and a cold winter dormancy. Tap water and rich potting soil kill the roots.
Uses
A worldwide novelty houseplant and educational classroom favorite, the Venus flytrap is also protected in its tiny native range where wild populations face poaching pressures.
