What composers do

Composers write music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, vocal soloists, choirs, film and television, video games, theater, and dance. They sketch ideas, develop themes, orchestrate, prepare scores and parts, and supervise rehearsals or recording sessions.

Training path

Most US concert composers hold bachelor and master degrees, often a doctorate, in composition. Film and game composers may come from performance, jazz, or self-taught backgrounds, building careers through assistant work and direct commissions.
