What cooks do
Cooks prep ingredients, run cooking stations, plate dishes during service, follow recipes or daily specials, and clean and sanitize work areas. Most line cooks specialize at a station such as grill, saute, fry, or pantry.
Training path
Cooks typically learn on the job, advancing through stations under the watch of a chef de cuisine. Many supplement experience with a culinary-arts certificate or associate degree from programs such as the CIA, Johnson and Wales, or local community colleges.
Work setting
