Sensei

A martial-arts master who instructs students in techniques, philosophy, and discipline of a traditional combat art.

What senseis do

Senseis teach martial arts such as karate, judo, aikido, kendo, or jiu-jitsu, lead practice sessions, conduct kyu and dan rank examinations, and instill the philosophical traditions of the art. Many also own and operate the dojo where they teach.

Training path

Becoming a sensei typically requires fifteen to twenty-five years of training to second- or third-degree black belt within a recognized lineage, plus instructor certification from the governing body such as the World Karate Federation or Kodokan.

Work setting

Independent dojos make up the largest share of employment; YMCAs, community recreation centers, college clubs, and elementary-school after-care programs also hire instructors. Many supplement teaching with seminar circuits and tournament officiating.
