A trainer who develops athletes' or teams' performance through skill instruction, conditioning, and strategy.
What coaches do
Coaches plan practices, instruct technique, develop game plans, scout opponents, manage rosters and substitutions, and mentor athletes both on and off the playing surface. Head coaches lead staffs of assistants who specialize in offense, defense, or specific skills.
Training path
Most coaches hold a bachelor’s degree and many years of playing experience in their sport. Sport-specific certifications (USA Football, US Soccer, USTA, USA Hockey) and the NSCA or CSCS strength-and-conditioning credential are standard for serious coaches.
Work setting
Employers include high school athletic departments, NCAA programs, professional sports franchises, club sports organizations, and private skills academies. Travel for recruiting and games is a regular feature of college and pro positions.
