A small Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea known worldwide for its whitewashed villages and resort nightlife.
Geography
Mykonos is dry, rocky, and largely treeless, with low rolling hills and a coastline of beaches and small bays. The highest point, Profitis Ilias, reaches 372 m. The island’s iconic windmills, built in the 16th century, stand above the harbor of Chora.
Tourism
Mykonos became internationally popular as a luxury destination in the 1960s and remains a major Mediterranean tourism hub. The narrow alleys of Chora, designed to confuse pirates, contain dense clusters of restaurants, bars, and shops.
History
The neighboring uninhabited island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the sacred birthplace of Apollo and Artemis in Greek mythology and remained a major religious and trading center in the ancient world.
