Touchstone Pictures and Summit Entertainment released Step Up in August 2006. Anne Fletcher, formerly a choreographer, made her directorial debut. Channing Tatum starred as the Baltimore foster youth Tyler Gage, opposite Jenna Dewan as the Maryland School of the Arts student Nora Clark.
Story
After Tyler and his friends vandalize a community arts academy in Baltimore, he is sentenced to community service at the school. There he meets Nora, a senior whose contemporary-dance partner has been injured, and the two begin rehearsing for her senior showcase as well as building a quiet relationship.
Reception
Step Up grossed over 114 million dollars worldwide on a 12 million dollar budget. It launched the Step Up film franchise, which produced five sequels through 2019, and it began the on-screen and off-screen partnership of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan.
