Fiddle Leaf Fig

Ficus lyrata

Filter:

A West African fig with enormous violin-shaped leaves on tall ramrod-straight stems, an Instagram-famous statement plant of modern interiors.

Description

The fiddle leaf fig has large, leathery, dark green leaves shaped like a fiddle or violin, held nearly horizontally on a stiff upright stem. In the wild it grows into a 15 metre strangler tree.

Cultivation

It demands very bright indirect light, even watering, and stable warmth. It dislikes being moved and may drop leaves or develop brown spots in response to under or over watering.

Uses

Once an obscure tropical specimen, fiddle leaf fig became a household name in the 2010s, displayed in offices, hotels, and high-end retail as a symbol of contemporary interior design.
