PLANTS

Flax Lily

Dianella tasmanica

Filter:

An evergreen strappy clumping perennial from Australia and New Zealand, prized in low-maintenance landscapes for its sword-like striped leaves.

Description

Flax lily forms a fountain-like clump of long, narrow, often variegated green-and-cream leaves. Airy sprays of blue six-petaled flowers in spring give way to glossy blue berries.

Cultivation

Tough, drought tolerant, and disease resistant, flax lily thrives in sun or part shade in many soils. It is widely used in commercial landscapes and around pools.

Uses

A staple of low-water landscaping in Mediterranean climates, flax lily is also planted to bind soil and provide habitat for small birds. Berries are mildly toxic to humans.
