Description
Japanese iris produces narrow upright leaves with a prominent midrib and bears huge flat flowers up to 25 centimetres wide, with falls held nearly horizontal and often veined in contrasting tones.
Cultivation
It thrives in acidic soil that stays wet through the spring growing season, dries somewhat in summer, and shelter from afternoon sun in hot regions. It is a long-lived perennial.
Uses
Japanese iris is a focal flower of seasonal exhibits and water gardens in Japan. Bred for centuries by Edo-period nurserymen, modern Higo, Ise, and Edo strains continue to be developed.
