A widespread coniferous shrub with prickly or scaly evergreen foliage and aromatic blue berries, used for gin flavoring, traditional medicine, and ornament.
Description
Common juniper grows as a sprawling shrub or small tree with sharp needle-like or scale-like green leaves. The female cones look like waxy blue-black berries and take two to three years to mature.
Cultivation
Drought and cold tolerant, juniper thrives in poor stony soil and full sun. Dozens of ornamental cultivars have spreading, weeping, or columnar habits.
Uses
Juniper berries flavor gin, savory game dishes, and herbal teas. Carved juniper wood was once used for tools and the smoke for ritual cleansing in many traditions.
