Moss

Bryophyta

Filter:

A worldwide group of small soft nonvascular plants that form green carpets on rocks, soil, and tree bark, ancient ancestors of land plants today.

Description

Mosses are simple plants without true roots, flowers, or seeds, made of tiny leafy stems that absorb water and nutrients directly through their surfaces. They reproduce by spores carried on slim stalks.

Cultivation

Mosses prefer cool damp shaded environments and dislike fertilizer. Many gardeners deliberately cultivate moss lawns and stone gardens, especially in Japan and the Pacific Northwest.

Uses

Moss has been used as packing material, baby diapering, and wound dressing thanks to its absorbent and mildly antiseptic qualities. Today it is central to terrariums, bonsai, and shade gardens.
