A tropical American climbing aroid famous for huge fenestrated heart-shaped leaves, one of the most photographed and traded houseplants of the modern era.
Description
Monstera produces large dark green leaves perforated with characteristic holes and deep splits, hanging from thick climbing stems with aerial roots. In the wild it grows up rainforest trees.
Cultivation
Bright indirect light, warm humid air, and a moss pole produce the largest fenestrated leaves indoors. The plant tolerates lower light but leaves stay smaller and unsplit.
Uses
The starchy fruits called Mexican breadfruit ripen to taste like pineapple and banana but the rest of the plant contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Monstera is a worldwide design icon.
