A Brazilian rainforest plant called the prayer plant because its richly patterned leaves fold up at night as if in prayer, a popular tabletop houseplant.
Description
Maranta has oval leaves marked with red veins on a velvety dark green background, with feather-patterned bright green centers. Each evening the leaves fold upward, then unfurl by morning.
Cultivation
It needs warmth, humidity, and even moisture. Bright filtered light keeps the patterns vivid; direct sun bleaches the colors. Crispy leaf tips signal dry air or fluoride in tap water.
Uses
A long-loved indoor plant for its unique sleep movements and color, maranta is also a popular subject for terrariums, indoor hanging baskets, and small office desks.
