A traditional Mesoamerican folk healer who treats physical and spiritual ailments using herbs, prayer, and ritual.
What curanderas do
Curanderas, or curanderos for men, diagnose and treat ailments through a blend of herbalism, energy work, spiritual cleansing rituals (limpias), prayer, and counsel. They are widely respected practitioners in Mexican, Mexican-American, and Central American communities.
Training path
Training comes through long apprenticeships, often spanning a decade or more, with an established curandera who may be a family member or community elder. Some curanderas integrate formal herbalism, massage, or naturopathic credentials.
Work setting
Most curanderas practice from their own homes, accepting clients by referral; some maintain rooms in botanicas (herbal shops) or community health centers serving Latin American immigrants. Service is often donation-based rather than fee-for-service.
