What diplomats do
Diplomats represent their country at embassies and consulates abroad. They negotiate treaties, support trade and investment, issue visas and assist citizens, report on local political and economic events, and run consular and public diplomacy programs.
Training path
US Foreign Service officers must pass the Foreign Service Officer Test, undergo a rigorous oral assessment, and meet medical and security clearance requirements. Most hold bachelor’s degrees and many hold graduate degrees in international affairs, law, or area studies.
Settings
US diplomats work for the State Department at over 270 embassies, consulates, and other posts worldwide, at the State Department and other agencies in Washington, and in multilateral missions to organizations such as the United Nations and NATO.
